PhD Meteorology and Climate Science

Overview

As a result of KNUST-GMet collaboration that led to the establishment of the BSc and MPhil. Meteorology and Climate Science Programme in 2008 and 2011 respectively, the PhD (Meteorology and Climate Science) programme was introduced in 2011/2012 academic year to provide doctoral training to the MPhil (Meteorology and Climate Science) graduates and other qualified candidates.

The PhD in Meteorology and Climate Science programme comprises five (5) courses in total. All of these are taught- courses. Each student in the program takes lectures and examination in the courses. The PhD (Meteorology and Climate Science) programme has graduated students since 2015.

Aims:

The aim for the establishment of the PhD degree in Meteorology and Climate Science was to build human capacity by training to produce skilled postgraduates with world class standard qualities.

Objectives

The objectives were to train doctoral students to acquire skills in the following areas:

  1. Atmospheric Physics and Chemistry

  1. Meteorology skills in weather and seasonal forecasting

  2. Climate science (physical climate processes of tropical Africa and the world at large)

  3. Satellite and ground based remote sensing methodologies and applications

  4. Atmospheric and terrestrial pollution issues

  5. Atmospheric, ocean, land and vegetation modelling
